Story of Navratri
Long ago, a powerful demon named Mahishasura received a boon that no man or god could defeat him. With his strength, he began troubling the heavens and the earth. The gods grew worried and prayed for help. Hearing their prayers, Goddess Durga was created with the combined powers of all the gods. She rode a lion and carried different weapons in her many hands. A great battle began between Durga and Mahishasura. For nine days and nights, the fight continued. On the tenth day, Goddess Durga finally defeated and killed Mahishasura. Since then, these nine nights are celebrated as Navratri, honoring the victory of good over evil and the power of the Goddess.
